What does a wheelhouse do?

The steering gear converts the rotational movement of the steering wheel into a movement of the steering rods. These rods transmit the movement to the wheels.

In a hydraulic system, the power steering pump supplies oil under pressure. The power steering unit uses this pressure to assist the driver in steering. The design varies by vehicle.

Why is a wheelhouse important?

A properly functioning steering system helps the truck respond accurately to steering inputs. Wear, play, or leaks can interfere with its operation.

Heavy steering or play in the steering wheel doesn't always mean the steering rack is faulty. The power steering pump, hoses, and steering rods can also be factors. Therefore, have the cause checked first.

What should you look for when making your choice?

Check the original part number, also known as the OEM number. Also, compare the make, vehicle type, and model. A steering gear for the same truck make does not automatically fit every model.

Also check the mounting, connections, and attachment to the steering column and steering rods. Make sure the steering gear is compatible with your vehicle's model.

When purchasing a reconditioned steering gear, review the product specifications and terms of delivery. If you have any questions, ask what work was performed and whether the old steering gear must be returned.

Applications in Maintenance and Repair

During maintenance, have the steering gear and connections checked for leaks, play, and damage. For hydraulic systems, this inspection should also include the oil level and the lines.

Have the replacement performed in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions. Use the specified oil and bleed the system as needed. After installation, have the steering operation and any necessary adjustments checked.
